All students are required to start at the beginning of the autumn term, and there is no separate admission for the spring term. Because of the limited admission quota possession of the degree requirements does not guarantee admission. Only those applicants who have attained a high level of academic performance in their previous studies will be admitted. Students graduating after the application deadline may apply, on the condition that the following attachments are submitted: certified copy of the original degree certificate (in the original language) final transcript their English, Finnish or Swedish translations or an English-language Diploma Supplement concerning graduates from European institutions of higher education The attachments need to be submitted and arrive at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences by the by the 14 July 2017 at 15:00 (local time in Finland, GMT +2). All translations must be made by an authorized translator. If copies of translations are submitted those must also be officially certified. The following document is optional and does not affect the application in any way. It is simply asked for identification purposes when handling the applicant’s documents, which sometimes contain the applicant’s name in different forms: Copy of information page of the passport or identification card containing the applicant’s name, date of birth and photo. During the application round, a secondary/high school certificate may be requested from the applicant. This might be necessary for determining the length of the applicant’s previous education (this concerns degrees from a minority of countries). An applicant should enrol to a language test early enough, e.g., 1-2 months before a test day. This is important because the test results are needed at the end of the application period. Tests might be full for a late applicant. Application documents will not be returned to the applicant. It is not possible to apply with the same submitted documents in later application periods. Applications sent by e-mail or fax are not accepted. Incomplete applications will not be processed. ©City of Turku and University of Turku Communications [-]

The Networked Systems Security track gives its students profound and substantial education and expertise in the networked systems security and field of technology. PROGRAMME IN BRIEF Programme structure Advanced-level studies in the major subject 50 ECTS credits Language, intermediate level and optional studies 40 ECTS credits Thesis for the Master of Science or Master of Science in Technology degree 30 ECTS credits Academic excellence & experience The Master’s Degree Programme in Information Security and Cryptography is a two-year programme. It focuses on information security technologies for networked systems and applications of the communication-intensive future. The covered topics include: system and network security security of communication systems and applications security in system design You will gain profound and substantial education and expertise in the field of networked systems security. The topic is approached in a multi-disciplinary fashion. You will have compulsory studies both in cryptographic and management aspects of information security. System and network security research concentrates on studying information security technologies for networked systems and applications of the communication-intensive future. These are studied from the perspective of engineering as well as from the users’ point of view. The goal of the research is to apply scientific and technological development in building the secure information society. The basic elements of people’s well-being are considered as the most fundamental drivers for pursuing this strategic goal. The aim is to make the technology-driven and human-driven directions of development meet. This is pursued with an interdisciplinary approach, where new innovations create active interaction between traditional fields of science. Master's thesis & topics In the Master’s thesis, you must prove your ability to conduct scientific research. You need to master the management of research methods, knowledge of the research field and skill of scientific writing. The goal of the Master’s thesis is: to train students in independent problem solving for demanding research questions to train students in presentation and argumentation skills, both oral and written to train students in search and critical evaluation of information to develop an ability to engage in a constructive dialogue with related disciplines to gain insight into actual research and development work as well as the possibilities and constraints of information security methods in the application domain and in the society at large. Examples of thesis topics: Internal Anomaly Detection System for Enhancing Security of IPv6-enabled Wireless Sensor Networks Mitigating modern organization-wide network threats and data leakages Usability and Security in Medication Administration Applications Enhancing Security of Linux OS Against Administrators Threat modeling a factory environment using Microsoft Security Development Lifecycle methodology Evaluation of Machine Learning Classifiers for Mobile Network Intrusion Detection Systems ENTRY REQUIREMENTS General degree requirements The Programme requires a Bachelor of Science degree that formally qualifies the applicant to access Master-level studies in the country where it has been completed. This degree should correspond to at least 180 ECTS or to a minimum of three years of full-time study. It should be awarded by a full university (i.e. an institution of higher education offering a doctorate). OR A polytechnic degree from a Finnish University of Applied Sciences (ammattikorkeakoulu). However, students with such degree might be required to complete additional studies while studying for the Master’s degree (see Additional studies) in order to qualify for the Master’s degree studies. Possible work experience could also be considered as additional studies. Applicants seeking admission on the basis of a degree from a Finnish university of applied sciences should note the language requirements concerning the Finnish language. Programme-Specific Degree Requirements The applicant’s previous degree on the basis of which they are seeking admission to the Master’s Degree Programme must be in a relevant field of study. Relevant fields of previous studies for this Programme depend on the chosen study track. In the Networked Systems Security track, relevant fields of previous studies include: communication and network systems software engineering computer science computer technology information technology In the Cryptography and Data Security track, the previous studies are required to be in: mathematics fields related to mathematics Applicants may choose only one of the two available tracks upon application. It is very important that the applicant chooses the track that is closest to the field of the previous degree. In each track, applications with a previous degree in a non-relevant field have little or no chance of success. The decision for admission will be based on the relevance of: the applicant’s previous degree(s) the amount, relevance and grades of the courses in the degree(s) language test result (see Language requirements) motivation letter Applications that meet the general degree requirements are then evaluated on the basis of how well the applicant’s previous degree, in academic terms, corresponds to the Programme and the selected track. Study merits in the applicant’s previous degree (BSc) are highly relevant. The letter of motivation is another important factor in considering the applicant’s suitability to the Programme. A previously earned Master’s degree does not automatically place the applicant ahead of other applicants. Additional Studies The contents of the formally eligible applicants’ previous degrees do not always have to correspond to the academic level of the Programme. Therefore admitted students can be advised or required to complete additional, Bachelor-level studies (see language requirements). These can be done while studying for the Master’s Degree, but they are not part of the degree and may extend the targeted study time. The additional studies may be included in the optional studies of the Master’s degree only if the applicant lacks previous knowledge in a certain field that is required for following a specific course within the Programme. Language Requirements All applicants must prove their English language skills in one of the ways accepted by the Faculty. Applicants seeking admission on the basis of a polytechnic degree from a Finnish university of applied sciences must prove their proficiency in Finnish as well. This is because the additional Bachelor’s level studies that need to be completed during the Master’s level studies are available only in Finnish. HOW AND WHEN TO APPLY Application Form and Enclosures The Programme offers the following tracks in 2017: Cryptography and Data Security Networked Systems Security Applications are done on the Studyinfo portal (www.studyinfo.fi). The general and country specific requirements concerning the way of certifying and submitting the documents must be followed also after the expiry of the application period. The application documents required as officially certified copies must bear the official stamp and signature of an authorised university official from the institution awarding the degree or a notary public. All translations must be made by an authorised translator. If copies of translations are submitted, those must also be officially certified. The following document is optional and does not affect the application in any way. It is simply asked for identification purposes when handling the applicant’s documents, which sometimes contain the applicant’s name in different forms: copy of information page of the passport or identification card containing the applicant’s name, date of birth and photo. During the application round, an upper secondary/high school certificate may be requested from the applicant. This might be necessary for determining the length of the applicant’s previous education (this concerns degrees from a minority of countries). An applicant should enroll to a language test early enough, e.g., 1-2 months before a test day. This is important because the test results are needed at the end of the application period and the tests might be already full for a late application. Application documents will not be returned to the applicant. It is not possible to apply with the same submitted documents in later application periods. Applications sent by e-mail or fax are not accepted. Incomplete applications will not be processed. ©City of Turku and University of Turku Communications [-]
